Kyle Franz’s 2021 restoration at Southern Pines Golf Club focused on honoring Donald Ross’s original design while improving modern playability – rebuilt greens and bunkers, restored shot values, and tree removal to better reveal the natural Sandhills landscape. A new par-three inspired by a “lost” Ross design reinforces Southern Pines as a classic North Carolina golf course.

Overhills at Southern Pines Golf Club is an 18-hole putting course designed by Kyle Franz. Spanning 22,000 square feet, Overhills is open daily to Members, Resort Guests and golfers playing Southern Pines Golf Club on a first-come, first-served basis.
Overhills amenities include solar lighting to allow play into the evening, music, speaker system and portable custom trailer for special events. The course is also available for private events. Read more about Overhills here.

In 2021, Southern Pines Golf Club re-opened following an 18-month restoration, guided by architect Kyle Franz, including tree removal, bunker reconstruction, irrigation upgrades, and refinements to evolve Donald Ross’ design. Fairways were widened and maintained rough removed around greens to enhance strategy, creativity, and enjoyment, all while preserving the course’s historic routing.
